Pregnancy Ultrasound

I am pleased to now be able to offer a pregnancy scanning service for dogs, cats and other small animals. I am fully trained by the prestigious Vet Image Solutions in ultrasound and insured with Petplan Sanctuary.

Pregnancy diagnosis ultrasound scans can be done in the comfort of your own home, reducing the stress of travelling your pet or alternatively you can bring you can bring them to me. This would be the same scan you would have at your vets but at a lower fee.

Why Ultrasound?

Ultrasound scans are non-invasive and painless to the animal being scanned. It is the only way of truly knowing whether your pet is in whelp at an earlier stage and it is an invaluable tool. Some of the benefits of having me ultrasound your pet are:

  • To diagnose pregnancy or non-pregnancy
  • To diagnose a phantom pregnancy
  • To know how many puppies/kittens you are expecting
  • To monitor the healthy development of the puppies and their ongoing growth
  • To potentially highlight any issues with a pregnancy which may need to be brought to the vets attention
  • Cheaper with an ultrasound technician than going to the vets
  • No sedation or clipping of fur needed

When to ultrasound…

Ideally you should have 2 scans performed on your dog/cat but the minimum recommended is at least one scan to diagnose pregnancy.

The first scan, which is the diagnosis scan, is completed between 28-35 days after the last successful tie or insemination (AI). This is the scan to determine whether your pet is indeed pregnant and at this time you would be able to also count the size of the litter.

Ideally you would have a second scan performed at around 45 days into the pregnancy. This scan is to check on the health of the litter and that the babies are maturing properly and all looking healthy and well. At this stage you are able to see far more developed puppies/kittens, with spines, etc all now visible. You cannot count the number in the litter easily at this stage as much larger however you can ensure all heartbeats, etc are all performing correctly.
