Haggatty Kennels were founded in the 1980’s in Barbados by Jeremy and Diane Whitton who bred and showed Boxers alongside their daughter Jane who now carries the kennel name on. Jane showed successfully with their dogs and was Junior Handler Champion many years in a row with her dog Ch. Featherbed Typesetter of Haggatty (Fred) who she showed from a puppy and made up to Champion status herself by the time she was 12 yrs old.
Haggatty Beagles are based in Kent in the UK. In the main it is run by Jane Whitton with the help of her partner Andrew and his kids.
The link to Beagles comes through Jane’s great aunt Joan Whitton, who in 1950 started up the now historic Tavernmews Beagles kennel. Joan started out with Dalmations but soon focused on Beagles, with her foundation bitch being a pack bred beagle called East Nene Bridesmaid who she bought unseen for just £5. She won well enough but it was her progeny that really excelled and from her two litters the Tavernmews line all descended.
Progeny of ‘Bridesmaid’ include 18 Champions! From her first litter to another pack hound came Ch. Tavernmews Bashful (winner of 10 x CC’s) and Tavernmews Dignity (winner of 6 x RCC’s). Bridesmaid’s second litter were by Ch. Solomon of Stanhurst and with him she produced Tavernmews Statesman who won a RCC and went Best in Show.
From Bridesmaid directly descended the following Champions in the ring: Tavernmews Bashful, Elmhust Playmate, Woodbeech Wisdom, Tavernmews Bonnet (the first dog to be awarded a Junior Warrant), Tavernmews Ranter, Tavernmews Rainbow, Tavernmews Barrister, Tavernmews Rival, Twinrivers Bellman, Tavernmews Brevity, Australion Ch. Stanhurst Raleigh, Jonavere Apple Blossom, Webline Holly, Gaytail Brigand, Manico Chancellor, Tavernmews Rebecca, Tavernmews Trademark and Korwin Candida. Many of these dogs are to be found in the back pedigree of the modern day Beagle.*
When Jane decided to return to the show ring, the decision was made to focus on Beagles. It would have been nice to be able to carry on the Tavernmews kennel name however this name is sealed with the KC as of historic significance due to the impact of the line on the breed. As such she decided to carry on the name Haggatty which was not just her parent’s kennel name but the name of her childhood home in Barbados.
The hope is to carry on the kennel where Joan left off in a way. That in mind, her foundation bitch Tabula Rasa of Haggatty (Daisy) herself descends from Tavernmews bloodlines. The icing on the cake came about when Jalhar The Wonder of You at Haggatty (Elvis) joined the family as his pedigree also goes right back to Tavernmews breeding as well. Truly making it fateful and meaning that in pairing them we really are in a way carrying on Joan’s bloodlines.
Since then we have grown though still small. Daisy, Elvis, Lily, Luna and Phoebe all now hold their KC Stud Book Numbers which mean they are all qualified for Crufts for life. Phoebe also holds her Junior Warrant certificate and title, something very special as she is a homebred daughter of Elvis and Luna. We will continue to show them and our younger girl Poppy whilst them also being members of the family first and foremost.
